Flanbwayan Haitian Literacy Project responds to Supreme Court decision on TPS.

New York, NY — Today, the Supreme Court sided with the Trump Administration in Mullin v Doe, allowing the Administration to move forward with ending Temporary Protective Status (TPS) for over 350,000 Haitians and Syrians, accelerating its mass deportation agenda.

This cruel and devastating decision will immediately affect an estimated 40,000 Haitian New Yorkers. This decision also puts the future of TPS for 1.3 million people from other countries who have built their lives and families in the US at risk.

Darnell Benoit, Executive Director of Flanbwayan Haitian Literacy Project, issued the following statement:

Today, while many of our students were celebrating their graduation, the Supreme Court issued its cruel decision to allow the Trump administration to end TPS for Haitians and Syrians.

Haitian youth and their families we serve every day at Flanbwayan just had their lives turned upside down. Many will now have to figure out how to survive, how to pay for rent, how to find work, instead of taking time to soak in their accomplishments today. This is truly inhumane and unjust.

The young Haitian people we serve are the future of New York. We’ve worked hard to create a safe space for them so they can dream freely about their futures and prepare for the next chapter of their lives. When this country denies them the opportunity to reach their full potential, we all lose.

Today, we ask everyone to check in on your Haitian and Syrian neighbors. Reach out to families you know. Offer support in whatever way you can. Community has always carried us through moments like this.

We also demand more from our elected leaders. We need permanent protections and a pathway to citizenship for all immigrants. Simply put, we need amnesty now. We call on people across the country to stand with Haitian families and with every immigrant community under attack. Join us in demanding a just future for all immigrants.
