Education and Outreach
Flanbwayan engages in Educational and Outreach activities aimed at increasing the number of new immigrant English Language Learners that gain access to adequate high school programs within the public school system.
Advocacy
Flanbwayan addresses persistent issues such as lack of services for English language learners, and expands the involvement of new immigrant students and the community in education advocacy.
Youth Organizing/Leadership
Flanbwayan helps students develop the skills they need to extend the voices of immigrant youth to transform their communities that are directly affected by lack of educational opportunities.
Cultural Activities
Dance
Students continue to learn about their country and culture through Haitian Folklore Dance workshops.
Popular Theater
Members are provided a space to develop self-confidence, solidarity while working under the leadership of a community organizer in developing plays that reflect their collective struggles and enhancing their talents as youth facilitators and organizers.
Media
Radio production
Weekly segment on education on community radio to raise awareness of educational issues affecting the community, we provide school information, and conduct outreach.
Media Literacy
Through documentaries Flanbwayan screens, students are exposed to social issues and are engaged in analytical and critical thinking. The documentaries present students with issues that impact their lives; there they are encouraged to explore questions and challenges of being socially active.
Monthly Forums
Members gather together with invited guest to engage in a discourse on various social issues. These forums provide students opportunities to discover their communities, build self-esteem, develop leadership skills, and enhance civic participation.
